Chapter 9

Dinner was served outside in the main picnic area that evening. When Lacey announced the scores from the day's events, a cheer rose from the cluster of tables where the blue team was sitting—they were ahead by three points. "It's not over yet," Lacey said. "After dinner we'll have our final contest, capture the flag, which is worth ten points."

Everyone seemed to be in high spirits, calling out "Blue is best" and "Red team rules." Elizabeth tried to appear enthusiastic, but inside she was frantic because Jessica still hadn't returned.

Maria stopped by her table, looking out of place in her red T-shirt. A few of the blue team's members booed and hissed. She laughed good-naturedly and turned to Elizabeth. "Is she back yet?" she asked in a whisper.

"No," Elizabeth answered glumly. She scooped up a forkful of stringy meat slathered with barbecue sauce, then set it back on her tray. "What is this stuff? Beef? Pork?"

Maria scrunched up her nose. "I was wondering the same thing myself. It could be roadkill, for all I know."

"I don't think I'm very hungry," Elizabeth said, pushing her tray away.

"Bernard is hopeless," Maria said with a laugh. "But try the beans, Liz. They aren't too bad."

Elizabeth shook her head. "My stomach feels like it's tied up in a big knot. I tried to find Lila earlier, to see if she knew where Jessica was planning to go."

Maria's eyes narrowed. "I haven't seen Lila all day, come to think of it. Where do you suppose she's escaped to?"

Elizabeth shrugged. "Who knows? I haven't seen Bo either. Maybe they're all having a great time on a double date while I'm stuck here playing Jessica." She glanced at her watch and sighed. "Jess volunteered to help set up for capture the flag, so I guess I'd better go do that."

"See you later, Jessica," Maria said with a sly smile.

Elizabeth rolled her eves. As she headed toward the main field, Joey came up behind her and pulled her behind a tree. "Jessica, huh?" he whispered close to her ear. "I don't think so."

Elizabeth smiled, glowing with the pleasure of running into Joey unexpectedly. "I'm still amazed that you can tell us apart," she said, gazing into his deep green eyes.

Joey kissed her, then took her hand in his. "Let's go for a walk. I've wanted to be alone with you all day."

"I can't," she said wistfully. "I have to cover for Jess—" Elizabeth stopped in midsentence, realizing what she was saying. I'm supposed to be playing Jessica, she thought with a smile. I might as well enjoy myself as much as she does. "Sure, I can go for a walk with you," she told Joey.

"That was a sudden change of mind," Joey commented.

"I'm just letting myself get into the character," Elizabeth replied. "Isn't that what acting is all about? Jessica would never let her chores stop her from sneaking off with a gorgeous guy."

He laughed. "That makes perfect sense. And thanks for the compliment. I think you're gorgeous, too.
